Greg Berlanti is on a mission. He introduced us to many of the DC Comics superhero shows that are on the air today, such as Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and even Supergirl (which is now at home with him on The CW). However it looks like he’s now in the process of bringing yet another character to the small screen.
According to an exclusive by Deadline, Greg Berlanti and his team are getting together with Mara Brock Akil (Being Mary Jane) to bring Black Lighting to the live action world. Here is the synopsis they gave with the news:
He made his choice: he hung up the suit and his secret identity years ago, but with a daughter hell-bent on justice and a star student being recruited by a local gang, he’ll be pulled back into the fight as the wanted vigilante and DC legend — Black Lightning.
For those who don’t know, Jefferson Pierce a.k.a. Black Lightning is an DC Comics superhero with the ability to generate and manipulate electricity. He was introduced in 1977, and has been around in DC Comics since then. The news of his character receiving his own show will be taken as good news for those who have been looking for more diversity and representation from superheroes in the African American Community. And with Mara Brock Akil assisting with the project, its’s sure to get the proper treatment it deserves and get that little extra something it might have been missing. If this series takes off successfully, it will be another series with a Black superhero headlining, as well as Luke Cage. Hopefully we’ll be hearing of some positive developments on this in the near future.
Black Lightning (official title pending) is still in development, so we’ll be awaiting a release date for a while.
