Marvel has definitely been busy these past four years. In 2008, they launched what would become an incredibly successful shared universe with Iron Man, and now in 2016, we’re at the culmination of everything that’s happened since then. “Phase 3” basically marks the end and beginning of an era in the MCU, and Joe and Anthony Russo, the directors of the past two Captain America movies, are in charge of ending things off with Avengers: Infinity War.

While recently speaking to IGN  about the upcoming release of Civil war on Blu-ray and DVD, one of the things that they we’re asked about is the direction the shared universe is heading in during the next two Avengers films. Anthony Russo, half of the pair, gave a somewhat cryptic answer.

“I can’t get into too much detail about who we’re introducing, but these two movies are intended to be the culmination of everything that has happened in the MCU since the very first Iron Man movie. In being a culmination, these movies are in some ways going to be an end to certain things, and in some ways, they’re going to be the beginning of certain things.”

Of course Spider-Man and Black Panther we’re the two characters who were introduced in Civil War, and we know we can at least expect Captain Marvel to make an appearance in Infinity War, so that’s three characters whose stories will most likely continue after phase 3 concludes. That could definitely be the beginning of a new team of Avengers.

But before becoming the New Avengers, we have to see these characters be used to their fullest in Infinity War. Problem is, there’s so many characters to include, from the Guardians of the Galaxy to Ant-Man and Wasp. How is everyone going to get enough screen time?

“…You always have to make sure that your choices feel organic to the storytelling, and really, you have to sort of structure them in the way that they need to be there. You have to have them, or they shouldn’t be in the movie. It’s a little bit of a dance between the two, where you have big eyes, and you want everybody included in the movie, but you have to go through the process of… what’s the best story that you can tell.”

So clearly they Russo Bros. are going to have their hands full. They’ve scheduled to shot for this movie for a total of nine months, so hopefully that will give them enough time to sort out who they want to introduce and just how much time each character will get. At the end of the day, after they’re done, the MCU will definitely be different.

Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 is scheduled to release on May 4th, 2018.
