In 2009, a Sherlock Holmes reboot was made staring Robert Downey Jr. It’s hard to imagine the actor in any role other than that of Tony Stark/Iron Man, but he made it work in two films, and now it’s looking like a third is set to begin filming soon after about five years.
It had been announced years ago that a third film was being developed before the second entry, Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows even made it to theaters, but due to RDJ’s commitment to the MCU, the schedules conflicted, and the third entry had been on the back burner for a while. But while recently speaking with Collider, Sherlock Holmes Producer Joel Silver commented on the prospect of the movie beginning filming later this year:
“It looks like it could happen this fall. Downey said he wants to do it. He’s gotta launch into another Avengers movie, right after the New Year, so we’re trying to get it done. We have a script that we like. Jude [Law] is available and Downey is available, and we’re hoping we can get it done. If it works, great. If not, we’ll do it another time. But, it looks like it could happen now.”
So both Downey and Jude Law (who plays Watson) are on board for another sequel, but are they on board for just one, or even more? Well Silver is hopeful for many more.
“I hope [it’s not the last one]. I don’t think so. How many Bond films have they made? As long as there’s a character, we can work with it. It’s not an end story. We can keep going, as long as people want to do it. It’s [the actor’s] call. They have to say, ‘Okay, I’m ready to go.’ I read about them making another Bad Boys. If they want to do it, then you try to get it done.”
So we may see Downey Jr. reprise the role of Sherlock Holmes even after he’s down playing Tony Stark for the MCU. The previous two films did pretty well, so more sequels would probably be welcomed as long as they don’t overdo it. For now though, let’s just see if they can get the third film off the ground.
We’ll let you know as soon as Sherlock Holmes 3 receives a proper release date.
