Dark Phoenix Story May Take Place in Next X-Men Film

X-Men: Apocalypse is set to hit theaters nationwide in less than a week (at the time of this writing), and fans are pretty excited to see the new, younger version of the X-Men. Since the decision to reboot the franchise and basically clean the slate to give these characters a fresh start was made, that opened the option to try new stories, and even revisit and improve upon previous ones.

In an interview with EW, X-Men: Apocalypse producer Simon Kinberg spoke on the possibility of revisiting the story that X-Men: The Last Stand was loosely (read: very loosely) based on:

“I definitely would love to take another stab at the Dark Phoenix story.”

For those unaware, The Dark Phoenix Saga is an X-Men story in which Jean Grey basically becomes a villain after returning from an interstellar mission where she was exposed to radiation from a solar flare that made her achieve her highest potential as a telepath and telekinetic, which was basically the power of the “Phoenix”.

With the Bryan Singer already discussing the possibility of taking the next film into space, it seems even more likely to take place. But how will they lead the story there? Well, according to Sophie Turner (the actress who plays Jean Grey), there’s already going to be plot points headed in that direction:

“The seeds of Phoenix definitely are planted in there. She can’t control her powers unless she either fully stops them or lets them all loose, and that’s kind of Phoenix. I think in future movies to come we’ll definitely see a bit more of that.”

Whether we’ll see the full extent of the Phoenix on the big screen, or another half-assed version like in The Last Stand is yet to be known, but we’ll keep you guys posted on anything new that surfaces about this.

X-Men: Apocalypse is scheduled to release on May 27th, 2016.
