Looks like the TV side of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe is set to expand even more than it was originally planned too.
After being considered as the best part of Season 2 of Daredevil, Netflix has ordered a spinoff series for Jon Bernthal’s Punisher.
The news was officially made through a short teaser video (click here to see it). Here are a few statements made by some big wigs from Marvel, Netflix, and Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal, Casualty), the show’s executive producer and showrunner:
“We want to thank the fans who are clamoring for more of Jon’s stunning and powerful performance as Frank Castle from Marvel’s Daredevil. Now combined with Showrunner Steve Lightfoot’s compelling writing, we’re thrilled to bring Marvel’s The Punisher to Netflix.”
– Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television
“Jon hooked our global audience with his performance as Frank Castle from the moment he stepped on screen in Marvel’s Daredevil, and we are looking forward to seeing more of him in this role under the vision of Steve Lightfoot.”
– Cindy Holland, Netflix Vice President of Original Content.
“For me, the complexity and unpredictability of Frank Castle make him an incredibly compelling character and I couldn’t be more excited to dive into his world. After watching Jon’s performance in ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ I could not be more excited to be working with him to further develop and progress the story of this anti-hero in a show of his own.”
Whether we see The Punisher directly interact with the other heroes in Marvel’s Netflix universe is yet to be known, but the prospect of Jon Bernthal getting another chance to show us his skills as Frank Caste is a very tantalizing prospect. We’ll just have to wait and see what becomes of it.
No official release date for The Punisher has been released yet.
