In 2001, a live-action adaptation to the popular Tomb Raider video game franchise was made staring Angelina Jolie. The movie was met with mostly negative reviews, but it still went on to have a sequel (which did only slightly better than it’s predecessor). Years later, the video game was rebooted and it let you play through Lara Croft’s first daunting adventure. This reboot was met with almost completely positive reviews, so of course they thought “well if a rebooted game does well, let’s reboot the films too! They’ll do great.”
The film was greenlit and is being produced by MGM and Warner Bros., and the actress set in the lead role is Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, The Man from U.N.C.L.E.).
Early reports and rumors were making it seem as if The Force Awakens’ star Daisy Ridley was to play Lara Croft in the film, but someway or another they went in a different direction, and seeing how Vikander has a bit more acting experience under her belt and is an Oscar winning actress, it was something of a smarter choice. We’ll just have to wait and see how she makes her version of Lara Croft stand apart from Angelina Jolie’s version.
The Tomb Raider reboot does not have an official release date or title yet, but we’ll keep you updated on the film’s development.
