Did Marvel unintentionally let us know what they’re naming the new Spider-Man solo film? That’s the word on the street, and the streets never lie (okay THAT’S a lie, but whatever).
It had previously been rumored that the webslinger’s rebooted solo film would be titled The Spectacular Spider-Man, or even Spider-Man: The New Avenger. The latest name that’s being thrown around is Spider-Man: Homecoming. If that’s the actual title, then it’d be interesting to see what they do with the film, since there’s a Spider-Man storyline that could be adapted into a film from that. We’ll get back to that in a second though.
The reason that people even think this could be a potential title for the film is due to the fact that Marvel – thanks to Sony so kindly agreed to share the rights of the character with them – has registered the URL SpiderManHomecomingTheMovie.com, and when a movie has a website made for it, the website’s name is usually what the movie is intended to be titled. Now what could this mean for the future of our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man? At the moment, all things are pointing to the aforementioned Spider-Man storyline, titled Homecoming.
Basically in the story, Peter Parker / Spider-Man has just returned to Earth from the Secret Wars (the 1984 one, not the 2015 one), and with his return came his infamous symbiote costume, which later turns around and becomes his nemesis, venom. The likelihood of this story being faithfully adapted to the film is fairly low for multiple reasons. First off, while Marvel films may share the names of some iconic storylines, the content in the film is often a far cry from the actual graphic novel (i.e. Age of Ultron). As well as that, Sony had recently made an announcement that they were working on a standalone Venom film. While this doesn’t directly affect the Spider-Man film, Sony still owns both characters, so having a storyline with the symbiote suit being used while the same symbiote is being featured in another movie that Sony is working on doesn’t really work well.
One thing to note is that the Homecoming story features both Captain America and Iron Man in it at one point. Why is that important? Because both characters were rumored to appear in the Spider-Man solo film at one point. While this is still unconfirmed, it’s likely that we’ll at least see some avengers in the Spider-Man standalone (courtesy of the deal Marvel and Sony were able to work out).
They could just be trying to throw us all for a loop though. This could just be a way for them to say that Spider-Man is coming home to Marvel Studios where he belongs. We’ll just have to see how Sony and Marvel have to say about these rumors soon.
What do you guys think of this though? Would you like to see this storyline adapted into a film, or is there another Spider-Man storyline you’re more interested in seeing? Let us know in the comment section below.
The untitled Spider-Man solo film is scheduled to release on July 7, 2017.
