No one expected Deadpool to do as amazing as it did critically, and financially. For just about 13 years, The Matrix Reloaded was the highest grossing R-Rated film, bringing in a total of $742,128,461 worldwide. Thanks to this past weekend, Deadpool has brought in a total of $745,974,060, sailing past The Matrix Reloaded by a few million dollars.
This is an amazing feat, seeing as how the film was only allotted $58 million for their production budget (trust me, it seems like a lot of money, but for a film? not so much). It seems very likely that Deadpool will also pass up X-Men: Days of Future Past, which brought in a total of 747,862,775 (fun fact: this film was allotted a $200 million production budget).
Deadpool is still only the 3rd highest grossing R-Rated film domestically ($349.5 million), with American Sniper in the lead ($350.1 million). With the way the movie is holding up in theaters now, it’ll probably have a breeze passing that movie up.
Deadpool is out in theaters now.
