Wonder Woman: New Image and Description Reveals The Amazons

This weekend, fans worldwide will get to see Wonder Woman debut in Batman V Superman before eventually starring in her own solo film in 2017. We’ve been gradually learning more and more about DC’s Amazonian princess as the days go by, but we haven’t really gotten to know her family: the Amazons of Themyscira. Until now, that is.

An image has been released (courtesy of EW),  serving as the first image for the solo outing, and also showcasing Princess Diana in her pre-Wonder Woman days-  in her Amazonian attire alongside her mother, Queen Hyppolyta (Connie Nielsen), her aunt, General Antiope (Robin Wright) and her lieutenant, Menalippe (Lisa Loven Kongsli). These three women served as Diana’s guide through her life, helping her find her destiny and eventually turning her into greatest female warrior of all time. “She is the only child they raised together,” director Patty Jenkins explains to EW. “And their love for her manifests in a different way for each of them.” You can view the image below:

In addition to the image, director Patty Jenkins provides us with a description of why their armor – which highly resembles the old-school style where the Amazons have less “protective” armor and show more skin while sporting some less-than-practical high heels – is reminiscent of the golden age amazons rather than the “New 52” version:

“To me, they shouldn’t be dressed in armor like men. It should be different. It should be authentic and real—and appealing to women.”

“It’s total wish-fulfillment. I, as a woman, want Wonder Woman to be hot as hell, fight badass, and look great at the same time—the same way men want Superman to have huge pecs and an impractically big body. That makes them feel like the hero they want to be. And my hero, in my head, has really long legs.”

We also have statements from Gal Gadot, the actress in the titular role, about what to expect from the Wonder Woman we’re going to see in her solo film:

“There’s only so much I can say, the Wonder Woman you’re going to see in Batman v Superman is a very different Wonder Woman that you will see in the standalone movie. The Wonder Woman that you see in Batman v Superman is a woman who has been around, and she’s very experienced. She understands a lot about man. Whereas in the standalone movie we are telling the grown-up story. Diana becoming Wonder Woman, and this was a story that was never told before. When she starts this journey, she’s very pure. She’s more naive, she’s this young idealist who does not really understand the complexities of life and the complexities of men.”

Wonder Woman is scheduled to release on June 23rd, 2017
