Guardians of The Galaxy was a fan favorite and something of a commercial success in the box office when it hit theaters a few years back. Of course, most of the credit was given to writer and director, James Gunn (as it should’ve been), but the movie wouldn’t have been as incredible as it was without the cast they chose to represent the team in the film. Gunn revealed that a sequel for the film would be coming out before the first film even hit theaters, and it looks like we finally have some solid news regarding the cast and the movie’s synopsis.
Casual viewers may not be too familiar with this, but the Guardians of The Galaxy have always been changing and updating their roster in the comics. It’s only natural that we should see the same in the films. Don’t worry though, all of the original cast is returning for the sequel. On the topic of new additions to the film’s cast though, we finally have word from James Gunn himself that French actress Pom Klementieff is confirmed in the role of skilled martial artist and psychic, Mantis, who is also a long time member of both the Guardians and the Avengers in the comics.
This isn’t such a shocking surprise though, seeing as how this casting announcement had been rumored since October of last year. It is nice to finally have some closure on that though. As well as Klementieff, we have Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby) in an unannounced role, Chris Sullivan (The Knick), in -surprise- another unannounced role. A big reveal though is Kurt Russell (Death Proof, The Hateful Eight), a high profile actor with many memorable roles under his belt, has been included in the official cast listing. Russell’s Character has yet to be named yet, but there’s already speculations of him playing Peter Quill / Star-Lord’s father.
These additions to the original cast are interesting and will be nice to look forward to. James Gunn has also taken to twitter to announce that the Guardians sequel has already begun filming, and that tweet was accompanied by this image:
Here we can see the original team, and of course Groot, who seems to still be growing from his “Baby Groot” phase. Cute.
All of these announcements are closed off with us receiving our first official synopsis of the film:
“Set to the all-new sonic backdrops of Awesome Mixtape #2, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2’ continues the team’s adventures as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill’s true parentage.”
Gunn has already described this film to be “A story about fathers”, But from this synopsis, it looks as though Quill’s quest to find his father will be the main force driving the story this time around. But not only Quill’s father. Thanos (played by Josh Brolin) is the father of both Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) in the film, and according to comments from Gillan, we can expect “a bit more fleshed out” relationship between these sisters.
This is all a lot of news to take in, and it looks like this time around, Gunn is mainly focusing on building relationships among the characters. What do you all think, though? Are you excited about these casting choices? Would you have preferred others in the roles? Let us know in the comment section below.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 is scheduled to release on May 5th, 2017.
