Last Monday we had the pleasure to see both Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live, where they revealed both the official poster and trailer for Captain America: Civil War. However, during the interview, Downey Jr. made a statement that could be a reveal of both actors appearing in another upcoming film as their superhero counterparts before the third Avengers film makes it’s way to theaters.
In the interview (which you can watch in full right here), Evans comments on the almost unbearable heat and humidity of Atlanta, calling it “Hotlanta.” Robert later responds to this by saying “By the way, we are going to shoot in Atlanta again, you and I” in which Chris replies to by saying “I know, I’m ready, I’m ready.” What ever could they be talking about? Well, here’s what we’ve heard on the down-low.
There are only so many movies that Downey Jr. could have been referencing, but the one that seems to be receiving the most buzz is the Spider-Man solo outing scheduled for 2017. There are other films that come out before that, but it wouldn’t add up if they appeared in those, and here’s why.
Thor: Ragnarok and Doctor Strange are both confirmed to be filming in international locations, and since Atlanta is obviously in the ol’ US of A, those two are immediately out of the equation. That only leaves Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2. However, James Gunn has already made it clear how important it is that Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is the only human in those films as of right now. He’s open to add more eventually, but at the moment, Iron Man and Cap, as big of characters as they are, wouldn’t fit in the cosmic world created by Gunn, and they’d probably take away from the other characters in some way. That only leaves us with Spider-Man.
The web-slinger’s solo outing is coming out in 2017, and Sony and Marvel struck a groundbreaking deal, which allows Spider-Man to appear in Marvel films and vice versa. Seeing as how this is the second reboot for the superhero, there’s a lot riding on this being the right one, and it wouldn’t hurt to bring in some big names like Captain America and Iron Man to help the film’s chances of being a success. And to add to that, Spider-Man actor Tom Holland revealed that the film would be shooting primarily in Atlanta while he was doing some press coverage for his film In the Heart of the Sea.
If these rumors end up being true, what do you think their roles in the film would be? And does this news even sound good to you, or do you think these two powerhouses would take away from Spider-Man all together? Let us know in the comment section below.
The untitled Spider-Man film is scheduled to release on July 28th, 2017.
