Season two of FOX’s Gotham is certainly living up to it’s title “Rise of The Villains”, since it has been announced that House of Cards actor Nathan Darrow is being cast to play Batman’s coolest (sorry) villain, Mr.Freeze
Going off the modern age comic version of the character, Freeze, real name Victor Fries (surname pronounced “freeze”. Go figure. ), was a cryogenicist, or one that studies the production and behavior of materials at very low temperatures. Fries’ wife Nora eventually contracts a terminal illness, which leads him to put her into a state of cryo-stasis -or suspended animation- with a freeze ray he was working on for his job. However, Victor’s boss tampers with the process, which leads to an explosion that kills Nora and causes chemicals to come in contact with Fries, lowering his body temperature to the point that he must wear a cryogenic suit in order to survive. Of course like every other villain ever, Fries swear to get revenge on everyone involved in his wife’s death and becomes Mr.Freeze.
According to TVLine, Gotham Executive Producer John Stephens says “The first time we see Freeze is in December, and then we’re going to be telling a heavy Freeze story in Episodes 12 and 13.”
Here’s Gotham’s official description of their version of the character:
“Though ferociously smart and eminently capable in his work as one of Gotham’s preeminent cryogenics engineers, Victor struggles to make meaningful connections with others. The one exception is his wife, Nora (casting TBA), who has tragically fallen ill with a terminal disease. Victor’s love for Nora knows no bounds, so as her condition worsens, he goes to extreme measures to figure out a way to freeze her before she dies. This harrowing journey leads to his transformation into the legendary DC villain, Mr. Freeze.”
Nathan Darrow plays as Frank Underwood’s bodyguard in Netflix series House of Cards, so we’ll see if he can bring that brooding, lonely, and vengeful vibe needed to play Mr.Freeze.
Gotham airs on FOX every Monday at 8pm CST
