It’s only been a little over twenty-four hours since the tickets went on sale for the long awaited continuation of the Star Wars saga -two months in advance, by the way- but somehow The Force Awakens has already managed to break records with their ticket sales.
In all honesty this news shouldn’t exactly come across as too shocking to anyone, considering the fact that just about every website that the tickets were available to be purchased on crashed at some point, including Fandango, Movie Tickets, and AMC. According to the people down at Deadline, this film has already compiled a whopping $6.5 Million in domestic IMAX ticket sales. Just to clarify, that $6.5 million is ONLY IMAX movie tickets, not 3-D or standard 2-D screenings. That’s kind of a big deal. According to senior executive VP, IMAX Corp. and CEO of IMAX Entertainment Greg Foster, “The only words to describe the first day of IMAX worldwide advance ticket sales for Star Wars: The Force Awakens are ‘record-shattering’….The fan reaction to the latest trailer and demand for this film in IMAX is unprecedented and we couldn’t be more excited to be a part of this phenomenon and share it with our partners at Disney, Lucasfilm, J.J. Abrams and the entire filmmaking team“.
The Force Awakens is off to an extremely strong start in ticket sales, and it probably won’t be losing this momentum for a while. Compared to the latest release in the Star Wars movie franchise, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, The Force Awakens sales are already four times greater than advance tickets sold over the same period of time. The film has also sold eight times as many tickets as The Hunger Games, which was previously the top first-day record holder for Fandango.
With still a little under two months to go before the movie is official shown in theaters, The Force Awakens has plenty of time to shatter more box office records, and we’re almost positive it will.
Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens is scheduled to release on December 18th, 2015
