RUMOR PATROL: Channing Tatum Wants Doug Liman To Direct Gambit movie

2016 is going to be jam-packed with Superhero films, and three of those are coming out of Twentieth Century Fox. Those films include X-Men: Apocalypse, Deadpool, and Gambit. While both X-Men: Apocalypse and Deadpool have had plenty of press and both have had trailers shown to the public (X-Men Apocalypse was only shown at SDCC, sadly), Gambit seems to be falling a little short in comparison. In fact, about a month ago it was said that the movie was being scraped altogether, but that turned out to just be a rumor. Now, another rumor has surfaced claming that Channing Tatum has finally found the (new) right guy to direct the first solo outing of Remy LeBeau.

We said “new” right guy because Gambit actually already had a director. Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) was already set to take it on, but due to creative differences with Fox, he stepped away. People who work with Fox on movies seem to have this similar issue, and that can lead to a really bad movie sometimes (*Cough* Fantastic Four *Cough*), so maybe it was better that Wyatt stepped away. Now, Gambit’s titular star and producer Channing Tatum wants Doug Liman (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, The Bourne Identity) to direct the film. This is based off a tweet from The Wrap’s Jeff Sneider, which we’ve posted here:

This will most likely be proven true or false within weeks, seeing as how a director needs to be chosen soon since the film comes out just next year. It’s very possible that the people at Fox are just trying to choose a director very wisely to prevent any issues from occurring due to differences of the overall vision of the movie and the direction it should go in. It’s not unwise, seeing as how this fresh IP could be the thing they need to keep up with the competitors (Marvel/Disney & DC/Warner Bros.) if it all works out. With X-Men: Apocalypse and Wolverine basically marking the end of an era within Fox’s comic book movie franchise, it’s up to Deadpool and Gambit to step up to the plate and take off running. Sadly, that can’t happen unless they have a director officially chosen to helm Gambit, so lets hope the truth about this rumor comes to light soon and they have someone in the role.

Deadpool is scheduled to release on February 12th, 2016

X-Men: Apocalypse is scheduled to release on May 27th, 2016

Gambit is scheduled to release on October 7th, 2016
